ABOUT THE PORT AUTHORITY

The excellent accessibility by water and the increasingly intensive use of Twente’s canals and its ports are all helping to strengthen the local economy, create jobs and improve the quality of life in the region.

COLLABORATION

Port of Twente is a collaborative partnership between five municipalities (Almelo, Enschede, Hengelo, Hof van Twente and Lochem). This partnership is aimed at combining and professionalizing all port-related activities, encouraging companies to opt for transport by water and stimulating innovation. The port authority is also the first point of contact for shipping companies and businesses in general. The participating municipalities have unified their approach and all work with the same port regulations, payment regulations, port fees and an automated system for the collection of port fees.

MAINPORT OF THE EASTERN NETHERLANDS

Between them, the inland ports on Twente’s canals form one of the biggest inland ports in the Netherlands. This inland port is strategically located along Europe’s North Sea-Baltic Corridor between the sea ports and the European hinterland in Germany, Poland and the Baltic states. This multimodal corridor (combination of water, road and rail) is one of the ten most important corridors in the European Union’s TEN-T programme.

Importance of the inland ports along Twente’s canals in the logistics network
The inland ports along Twente’s canals are not only important in reaching the hinterland from the ports of Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Antwerp; they also serve as key intersections within the Twente and Achterhoek regions, forming a logistics hotspot where companies are creating jobs and adding value. The ports along Twente’s canals are a lifeline for numerous companies operating in the local area/Euregio.

PORT OF LOGISTICS OVERIJSSEL

In the Dutch province of Overijssel, the Port of Twente, Port of Zwolle and Port of Deventer are three ambitious port authorities that are working together within the Ports of Logistics Overijssel (POLO) programme. POLO is an enterprise-driven collaborative partnership that is supported by the province of Overijssel. Together with businesses, government authorities, educational and research institutions and industry bodies, they are working to strengthen Overijssel’s logistics position, both in the Netherlands and in Europe. They are collaborating to achieve optimal accessibility, to put Overijssel on the map as an excellent base for logistics activities, to improve the alignment between education and the labour market, and to stimulate innovative and sustainable logistics processes. They are pooling their strengths and rapidly responding to developments to boost the logistics sector in Overijssel.
