Ports

Where are the Port of Twente inland ports located?

From the village of Eefde (north of Zutphen), the Twente Canal flows from the River IJssel to Enschede via Lochem, Markelo, Goor and Hengelo. To the west of Delden, the canal splits into two and one branch leads to Almelo which is why we use the term “Twente’s canals”.

Once they have passed through the lock at Eefde, vessels can sail along Twente’s canals to the following eight ports: Port of Lochem, Port of Markelo, Port of Goor, Port of XL Businesspark, Port of Almelo, Port of Delden, Port of Hengelo and Port of Enschede.

SAFETY AND SUPERVISION

Over 30% of the total freight in the Netherlands is shipped by inland waterway. Therefore, the waterway maintenance activities are focused on easing congestion at busy bottlenecks and improving safety. The Port of Twente port authority is rising to that challenge by setting clear, uniform rules and developing a safety plan.

MARITIME MANAGEMENT

The port authority keeps the shipping activities running smoothly and safely. Besides that, Port of Twente is keen to ensure that, through its harbour master, it provides excellent service. It is investigating which inland navigation rules need to be amended in order to reduce congestion and delays as much as possible. It is also looking at ways to expand and improve the facilities offered during port calls.

MARINAS

The ports along Twente’s canals are not suitable for pleasure craft. However, there are various marinas offering recreational mooring facilities.
